Trinity Lutheran has long been an active participant in the global fight against hunger by supporting the World Hunger and Disaster Response Program; sending special food aid to drought-stricken Tanzania; contributing to Heifer Project International for an "ark" of assorted animals which enable recipients to overcome hunger and poverty by having the wherewithal to provide food to eat and sell. In addition, they operate a local food bank, donate food to another local food bank and partner with a neighborhood elementary school to provide food baskets each Thanksgiving for needy families of the school's students. They also prepare and serve lunch twice each month at a local shelter for the homeless and sell "fair trade" food and craft items. They recently began to purchase and distribute "Life Pax" (prepackaged, nonperishable, complete meals) to persons asking for help as a sensible alternative to giving money.
In 1998, Pete and Suzie Davis, members of the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church, arrived in La Paz on their sailboat. During their stay in La Paz they fell in love with the children. Having returned to the states, and after looking at the Club Cruceros website, they contacted Judy Peterson, chairman of the Charities Committee of Club Cruceros. Shortly thereafter Pete flew to La Paz to visit the orphanage (Ciudad de los Niños y las Niñas), a children's shelter for babies and children up to eight years old (La Casa Cuna) and the breakfast kitchen run on the site of a Catholic Church in a poor neighborhood. They presented us with a generous check to apply to the purchase of food for the breakfast program.
Since that time, Trinity Lutheran has provided funds to purchase fruit and other incidentals for this program. In addition, they also sponsor more than a dozen students in junior and senior high school, and make a monthly donation toward our lunch program.
Our thanks to the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church for your continued support.
