Cinco de Mayo is a very important holiday for both Mexico and the United States. Before we moved to La Paz in 1987, we lived in California where 5 de Mayo was celebrated much more than the Mexican Independence day on the 16th of September. On this date in 1862, the Mexican army of 4000 defeated the French and traitor Mexican army of 8000 in the Battle of Puebla, a city 100 miles east of Mexico City.
St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Rocklin, California, which is located near Sacramento, California, has long been involved with the Gathering Inn, a rotating shelter for homeless families, Habitat for humanities, St. Vincent DePaul and Loaves and Fishes homeless soup kitchen.
For the last three years they have had a concert around the 5th of May to benefit our scholarship program. In the year 2007-2008, 12 students attended junior high school thanks to the efforts of the congregation of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, donor Cameron LeChance, and others in the same parish. |
