ROTARY INTERACTION
As members of Rotary International, the local La Paz Rotary Clubs have a responsibility to find ways to improve the quality of life for those in their communities and to serve the public interest. To that end, two of the five Rotary Clubs in La Paz have joined with us in projects to help children at risk.
In June of 2005, Club Rotario Balandra walled off a room in our existing dining room/multi-use building, in which we have a small library. Thanks to their guidance, we were introduced to the Public Library System of the City and County of La Paz, the State of Baja California Sur and the Mexican Federal Government. We have plans to build a second floor onto our original building which will house a public library complete with 12 computers and a wireless connection to the Internet. This project will continue to share the participation of the Club Rotario Balandra.
We have been collaborating since school year 2006-2007 with Club Rotario Todos Santos/Bahia La Paz in a scholarship program in Colonia Loma Obrera on the outskirts of La Paz. In August of 2007, 78 students from this neighborhood and 7 students from the community of El Centenario were given backpacks filled with school supplies, a uniform, gym clothes, school shoes and tennis shoes. Most of these students have grade point averages of 8 and above; however others exhibit excellent potential but are not able to maintain high grades because of their family situation.
The funds for this project were obtained from Rotary Foundation, in a matching grant with Coos Bay/North Bend Rotary Club District 5110 and Club Rotario Todos Santos/Bahia La Paz District 4100 in La Paz. A proposed grant for school year 2008/2009 will include Roseburg Rotary Club.
