Club Cruceros de La Paz, A.C., a Mexican non-profit civil association, is dedicated to helping the less fortunate children of La Paz and exchanging cruising information. The club’s membership is made up mostly of foreign boat owners and some “landlubbers.”
Since its inception in 1988, Club Cruceros has helped the Children of La Paz. They started with an annual “Subasta” (auction) held out of the back of a pickup, where money was made to purchase Christmas toys for less-advantaged children. The Club partnered with various local organizations which picked the most needy areas to deliver toys, blankets and food for the families at Christmastime.
After a period of time, the Club was looking for another organization with whom to partner. In 1995 they were asked by a member, Herb “Beto” Wilkins, to contribute US$1,000 to a breakfast program which took place in a small chapel in Colonia Marquez de Leon, where children were given a hot meal before going to school. The next year, they increased their donation to US$2,500. At this time, Judy Peterson became involved with the breakfast program, and was also named Chairman of the Charities Committee of Club Cruceros.
In 2000, some of the members of the Charity Committee formed a foundation, which later became FANLAP, with the contribution of the Club serving as the seed money. The Subasta continues to raise money for the lunchroom and scholarships.
We are extremely grateful to Club Cruceros de La Paz for helping us help the children all these years. |
